  1.
  2.                                SCHEDULE
  3.                          Version 4.00/4.10/4.33
  4.                                   by
  5.                            William H. Logan
  6.
  7. SCHEDULE 4.33 Adds BOLD print for the task numbers and task date lines
  8. as well as the task comment and ending date. In addition, some other
  9. minor bugs have been fixed. I also added the feature that if you press
  10. <ENTER> while editing, entering actual dates, or entering status
  11. comments, you will be returned to the Main Menu.
  12.
  13. Version 4.5 will steal the Top Line Menu Bar approach so widely used in
  14. programs these days. It is not and will not be a Windows Version,
  15. however, it should run well in a Windows DOS window. It really likes
  16. DR-DOS 6.00, but then so do I and almost everyone else who has used
  17. DR_DOS 6.00.
  18.
  19. While CLIPPER does not support MOUSE use, I can probably tell a user how
  20. to get the MOUSE to work if you have a LOGITECH with Ver 6.00 of their
  21. drivers. Almost anything can be moused with the new drivers!
  22.
  23. If any users desire a special version, or some minor enhancements or
  24. changes, I will be happy to prepare and deliver such a version.
  25.
  26. SCHEDULE Version 4.1 fixes some minor problems in Ver 4.00. The User
  27. Documentation, such as it is, is un-changed.
  28.
  29. SCHEDULE Version 4.00 represents significant fixes and alterations from
  30. previous version(s).  It is still 'shareware' and if you use and like
  31. it, you are expected to make some contribution to the author for his
  32. efforts.
  33.
  34. Notes:
  35. 1: Your old version schedules may be converted to the new format via
  36. SKEDCONV. That's all it does and it won't hurt an already converted
  37. schedule database.
  38.
  39. 2: This file has some special characters as borders and uses some
  40. lines longer than 80 characters.  In order to see it all, you should be
  41. looking at it via the LIST.COM program.  Selections from the Main Menu
  42. are set out as <A> or <B>.  List will happily go and find that for you.
  43.
  44. 3: THIS PROGRAM REQUIRES A WIDE CARRIAGE PRINTER.  BE SURE YOU HAVE IT
  45. ON AND 'ON-LINE' WITH WIDE PAPER LOADED!!
  46.
  47. 4: If you use any of the included "test" files, first load them up, that
  48. is, select the proper database and then use the <LIST> feature to see the
  49. dates. If the dates are way off and they probably will be, then use
  50. <DATE TRICKS> to slide them all ahead to a more reasonable date. Some of
  51. the test files are quite old now and you may need to do this to get them
  52. to print properly. I suggest you slide all the dates, that is, both
  53. planned and actual.
  54.
  55. 5: If you enter an actual date and no actual stop date, then you will
  56. have the chart precessed for you automatically. See Section D, below.
  57.
  58.
  59. Disclaimer: This program/system has been in use for over 6 years in one
  60. form or another and has been extensively tested, however, you may do
  61. things that may lead you to incorrect conclusions.  The author accepts
  62. no responsibility whatsoever for any loss of revenue, jobs or any other
  63. bad actions that may occur as a result of the use of this program.
  64. Before you make any decisions based on results you are advised to play
  65. and test extensively on the test files provided or on test files of your
  66. own making. I will attempt to clarify the actions of the program for
  67. those who register the program.  Any bugs or modification suggestions
  68. are gratefully acknowledged and will be corrected ASAP.
  69.
  70. This system is a Project Planner/Estimator and Gannt Chart Scheduling
  71. program that has been in use and development for about 7 years.  It began
  72. in M-BASIC on an old Kaypro 2 and has now gone through dBASE 2.1 2.43,
  73. III+, and finally to Clipper.  It is released into the public domain as
  74. shareware, which means if you use it and it is helpful to you, then a
  75. contribution to the author is expected.  Contributions are accepted in
  76. any amount, but $50 is suggested, as this program is EXTREMELY POWERFUL
  77. and very flexible.  Please feel free to distribute the program to your
  78. friends and associates.  If you do, only give them SKED_433.ZIP, that way
  79. they will get all of the stuff they need.
  80.
  81. Significant changes in Ver 4.00:
  82.     1. Select database one time.
  83.     2. Places for 8 personnel per task.
  84.     3. Corrected 'un-friendly' things in use of databases i.e., you
  85.     can't use SKED, the shell database.
  86.     4. Added linked tasks. See explanation below.
  87.     5. Set default parameters in the 'tricks' programs to 1.00 vice 0.00.
  88.     6. Allow tricks to all tasks or only one task.
  89.     7. Added sub tasks.
  90.     8. Shortened index time.
  91.     9. Added actual time to screen list.
  92.
  93.
  94. No apologies for the documentation.  I write code.  Not books.
  95.
  96. Schedules are in DATABASES that are indexed (by CLIPPER).  Some data is
  97. kept in memory files and there is one format file.  I suggest you
  98. install the whole thing in a SKED or SCHEDULE directory and work from
  99. there.  In database names we capture the 8th character (or the last one)
  100. so you get to use ONLY 7 characters for your names.
  101.
  102. There are some test files to play with called TEST_1.DBF and TEST_2.DBF,
  103. Don't worry about index and memory files as they will be created when they
  104. are needed.  Note that by the time you get these test files they may
  105. have been added to or taken from so don't be too upset if yours doesn't
  106. look exactly like the examples shown here. Before you try to print the
  107. test schedules, you should look at them through the Main Menu <L>
  108. option. If the dates are way out of whack (and they may be), then do
  109. some DATE TRICKS <T> on them, sliding them forward enough to get them
  110. into a reasonable relationship to the current date.
  111.
  112. Since the Schedule system is date based, it has a SETUP sub-routine that
  113. will be run before anything that might display or print garbled results
  114. is run.  It can be skipped, but do so only if you KNOW the index files
  115. are up to date.
  116.
  117. Version 4.00 introduces the concept of selecting a database before you
  118. do anything.  That is selection <S>.  If you wish to create a new
  119. schedule, that is selection <K>.  If you have not selected a database,
  120. then you can only do choices <U>, <K>, and <S>.  The database in use is
  121. shown below selection <S>.  If no name is here, you have not selected.
  122. Choice <U> is the system utilities that will allow you to do some stuff
  123. from inside SCHEDULE.  The most important of these is the setup of a
  124. printer re-direct. What this means is that your output that would
  125. normally go to a printer will go to a file called JUNK.XXX.  You can
  126. keep the file by renaming it if you wish.  It is convenient if you are
  127. working up a plan and don't want to print.  Everything normally sent to
  128. the printer is sent into the re-direct. The public domain program
  129. REPRINT is another excellent way to do re-directs.  Details of the
  130. utilities will be explained when we get there.
  131.
  132. SCHEDULE considers man-hours (or woman-hours) as a Direct Cost.  Each
  133. task line in the schedule can have 8 personnel assigned for differing
  134. amounts of time and at different hourly rates.  All man-hour costs are
  135. accumulated and displayed on the printed schedule.  Other Direct Costs
  136. are:
  137.
  138.            Travel
  139.            Food
  140.            Lodging
  141.            Auto
  142.            Equipment
  143.            Copies
  144.            Admin
  145.            Support
  146.            Miscellaneous
  147.
  148. There surely are more categories for ODCs than this, but these have been
  149. adequate for all our work.  At the end of the printed schedule a Project
  150. Summary is printed.  An example of that summary is:
  151.
  152.           PROJECT LENGTH IS   214 DAY(s)
  153.
  154.           EACH SYMBOL REPRESENTS  2 DAY(s)
  155.
  156.           TOTAL  ESTIMATED MAN-HOURS          =====>          2385 M/H
  157.
  158.           TOTAL ESTIMATED MAN-HOUR COSTS      =====> $   115364.71
  159.
  160.           TOTAL PROJECTED OTHER DIRECT COSTS  =====> $    19159.36
  161.
  162.           TOTAL PROJECTED COST                =====> $   134524.07
  163.
  164. This tells you what it will cost totally, what the ODCs are, how many
  165. man- hours are needed and how many days, start to finish, it will take.
  166. All you put in was the individual task values and dates.  In addition,
  167. there is a ODC report <G> that breaks down ODCs into the above
  168. categories and totals so that you can see how much you are planning for
  169. each one.  Actual costs are not included, though if some one were to
  170. ask ....
  171.
  172.
  173.
  174. The Main Menu is arrived at by entering:
